Preview of the World Boxing Council SuperMiddleWeight Title Fight
Next Saturday ( 4th June 2011 ) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, sees the second semi final of the Boxing Super Middleweight Super Six tournament between Carl Froch the WBC Champion & Glen Johnson. With the winner to meet Andre Ward, the unbeaten Olympic Boxing Gold Medalist from the Athens 2004 Games.
Glen Johnson at 42 is moving down from the Light Heavyweight division to take part in the Super Six having replaced the injured Mikkel Kessler, & Johnson is still a good talent.
But to be fair his age & the fact he has moved down in weight goes against him. Especially as Froch is arguably the best remaining super middleweight in the world.
Froch is at the peak of his powers currently & I cannot see how Johnson can win the fight. Froch has one of the best chins currently in boxing. His style is such, that he loves getting involved in toe to toe brawls & more importantly has got up from being knocked down to the canvas to win.
Froch's fight against Kessler was a barn stormer of a matchup. Whilst I also scored it in Kessler's favour, the fight was extremely close & Kessler has not been able to fight since, due to aggravating a previous injury in the fight with Froch.
The fight on Saturday also sees Carl Froch return to Sky Sports' Boxing coverage, who are broadcasting the fight live.
Froch's joining of the Matchroom stable is most definitely the right move & will mean that he will get the wider public exposure that his talent deserves.
I can't see the fight going the distance. Froch is far too strong for Johnson & I can see him stopping Johnson in the mid rounds.
Ladbrokes.com have Froch an odds on favourite to win at 2/9 on. The draw is 25/1 & a Johnson surprise win is 3/1
It might also be worth backing Froch to stop Johnson in the 6th round at 25/1
