Michael Owen signs a one year extension to his contact at Manchester United

The BBC are reporting this morning that former England striker Michael Owen has been offered a one year extension to his contract at Manchester United which he has signed.

Owen, who recently expressed his interest in continuing to play for Manchester United has been handed the new deal by Alex Ferguson.

Michael Owen also confirmed the new deal at Manchester United, by thanking all his fans via his own Twitter account.

Owen who was used sparingly by United this season, made 17 appearances & scored 5 goals. He also was handed a place on the bench on Saturday as Barcelona beat Manchester United in the Champions League final at Wembley.

That had been rumours, that Owen would retire from football altogether if Manchester United had decided against renewing his current deal, rather than join a club of a smaller stature.

The fact that United have reaffirmed Owen's place in Manchester United's plans for next season, leaves major doubts over Berbatov & what role if any he will be afforded next season.

It could well be possible that Ferguson may decide to sell the Bulgarian & use the funds raised in the transfer market over the summer.
